The Fern Forest Nursery as the leading supplier in Adelaide we’re glad to welcome you to the wonderful world of clumping bamboo. Bamboos are great plants but have often had a bad (and unfair) reputation in the past. At The Fern Forest Nursery we have been very careful to select a great range of clumping bamboo that WON’T get out of control. All the bamboo we sell has been chosen and tested for our harsh climate in own our trail gardens, because of this you can be confident the bamboo you choose will be the best one for your garden.

GROWING BAMBOO

Although bamboo is very tough and hardy they respond well to regular deep watering and generous amounts of organic fertiliser especially while they are young. These fast growing plants will make a great screen or stunning specimen plant in the garden or in pots.

BAMBOO VARIETIES

  • Alphonse Karr One of the best looking hedge bamboos. Pink new shoots turn into yellow culms with green stripes. A great small variety to 3 metres. Its upright habit is great for small hedges to block out the neighbours (plant at 1.5m centres).
  • Chinese dwarf bamboo- This is a compact, tufting, bushy bamboo that can grow up to 3 metres tall. The smallest of the bamboo we sell it can live happily in a pot for many years due to its small root ball.
  • China Gold- One of the most ornamental and beautiful of the bamboo available. It has fabulous golden yellow culms with green stripes. Makes a wonderful stand alone feature in any garden and is also great as a hedge or screening plant. A very tough, hardy plant that will constantly perform well in your garden. Fast growing reaching a height of 4 metres in 3-4 years.
  • Chungii- A stunning medium sized variety with its beautiful white new culms with bluish tinge slowly fades to green. Slow to start growing but worth the wait.
  • Ghost Bamboo- A very beautiful variety with large green leaves forming a dense canopy and stunning white culms making a stunning feature plant. Fast growing up to 6 metres tall. Perfect if you’re after a very tropical look from your bamboo.
  • Giant Buddha’s Belly- A very unusual variety but a constant favourite. It has swollen culms and makes an interesting feature plant. Slow to start off with but improves with age.
  • Gold Stripe- A great small variety to 3 metres. Its upright habit is great for small hedges to block out the neighbours (plant at 1.5m centres). Its green culms with yellow stripes make it very ornamental.
  • Gracilis- A very tall, narrow variety the perfect bamboo to block out a 2 story building and take up less than a metre in the ground! A very vertical plant with a tight clumping habit. Classic bamboo look, very graceful and fast growing up to six metres tall.
  • Nepalese Blue- A small variety 2-3 metres in height perfect choice if you have a shady area. Needs protection most of the day in our summers. Very delicate weeping appearance.
